Visit to NMIT and BSM

24 Jan 2020

On 21st January 2020, IO Maritime unit went for a visit to the Netherland Maritime Institute of Technology (NMIT) and Bumi Subsea Malaysia (BSM) to verify their capacity & capability to be a potential partner in the Dynamic Positioning (DP) Officer Training Program and the Remotely Operated Vehicle’s (ROV) Training Programme.

ROV is an unoccupied, highly maneuverable underwater robot that is operated by a pilot technician at the water surface. It can be used to explore ocean depths while keeping the operator out of harms way. In Malaysia, DP vessels and ROVs are mostly used by offshore platforms operators in the oil & gas sector.

Currently, BSM has 2 types of ROVs which are 13 units of Work Class ROV and 8 units of Observation Class ROV. These ROVs are used for high end inspections, surveys, construction and well intervention works in deep water at depths of up to 3000 msw.

Dynamic positioning (DP) is a computer-controlled system to automatically maintain a vessel's position and heading by using its own propellers and thrusters.

BSM owns 11 vessels fitted with DP2 & DP3 systems, which are combinations of position reference sensors, wind sensors and motion sensors to calculate the impact of environmental forces that affect the vessel’s position.

This visit has led us to discover the needs and niche of being DP Vessels Officer and ROVs Pilot, which are currently being dominated by foreign operators.

This may potentially be maritime team’s next programme in HCD, on top of handling our first signature seafarers programme - ETO. #icp #tdaberhad #maritime #rov #collaboration #industryvisit
